Distant Shores II Update

It’s six months since I began drafting the follow up to Perfect Timing, so a Distant Shores II update is perhaps overdue.  I have, however, been working on the story constantly.

NaNoWriMo 2016

Prior to the event, I set out my plans for November.  Did things go as planned?  For the most part, yes.  I exceeded the 50,000 word target, writing 54,980 words by December 1st, so I’m a…

What Actually Happened?

I said I wouldn’t be doing any editing while writing the draft, and I didn’t for the first couple weeks.  But because I was writing scenes as they came to me, instead of chronologically, I did some MINOR editing – inserting a missed word, correcting a glaring typo – while reading the previous day’s writing.

Approaching the end of November I knew I would exceed the contingency completion date of the middle of December, so extended the deadline to Christmas.  Unfortunately I needed a further extension, but by then the draft was over 78,000 words so allowed myself a well-earned week off to enjoy the holiday.

Into 2017…

I completed the draft on February 21, 2017.  Far later than I ever intended, but I’m what’s referred to as a “vomit drafter” – get it all out onto the page, good and bad.  The first draft should be rough and my philosophy is “If it’s not there, it can’t be edited.”

First Edit

The finished draft far exceeded 100,000 words.  So I knew a LOT would be cut, including a number of unnecessary sections of dialog.  I’d written some while battling the dreaded writer’s block, but it had kept me going and at the time that’s all that mattered.

While I advocate taking an extended break between edits, my internal editor screamed during the latter stages.  I silenced her by doing some prep – collating words to be culled, and highlighting every section of dialog – so only took a couple days off.

The edit took a month and was completed on March 24.  In addition to an eighty-five strong word list, I checked and amended contractions and extensions.  Then edited the dialog, and having eliminated tens of thousands of words, I printed and bound the draft myself.

Second Edit

Although the break of a couple weeks is relatively short, I’m ready to begin the second edit.  Or will be when I’ve made a few more preparatory notes.

This will be the main edit and I expect it to take a couple months.  There are a few inconsistencies to fix and the final title needs setting.

Similarly to Perfect Timing, the story is written from both Lou’s and Will’s points of view, but there is some balancing to be done as both will be heard equally this time around.  I love writing from the male character’s POV and it’s only fair Will is heard as much as Lou.

Next Distant Shores II Update?

The story is due for release in seven months, so I promise I won’t keep you waiting as long for the next Distant Shores II update.  In the meantime, please do follow me on Twitter and Facebook which I update more frequently.

Do you have any advice for me as I begin the second edit?  I’d love to chat!

NaNoWriMo 2016

NaNo16

NaNoWriMo 2016 is fast approaching and I’m proud to say that I’m taking part for the second straight year.   Yes, it means I’m committing to writing 50,000 words in a month at a required rate of 1,667 per day, while promoting Perfect Timing AND working with my narrator/ producer Beizo Tierno on the audiobook.

There’s no need to tell me I’m crazy… I already know!

NaNoWriMo 2015

Before I say anything about NaNoWriMo 2016, let’s recap last year’s event.  My freshman NaNo project was in fact Perfect Timing; the 67,500 word romance novel that you can pre-order now.

You can’t possibly have written so many words in 30 days?  You’re right.  A considerable portion of the story was already written, but I included them in my 2015 NaNo total, because I went against advice and let my inner editor lose on the pre-written sections during November, as they fitted into the story.  And by the end of the month I had full the finished draft.

Nanites fit into one of three categories…

Planner – someone who has a detailed outline of their story, perhaps including scenes they’ve already written.  This was me in 2015.

Pantser – someone who starts the month with a literal blank page and aims to write 50,000 in 30 days without any prior planning, therefore flying by the seat of their pants.

Plantser – someone who fits between the two, only doing minimal planning.

So what about NaNoWriMo 2016?

My project this year is perhaps unsurprisingly the second book of the Distant Shores series; Perfect Timing being the first.

As of right now, with EIGHT days to go before the event starts, I only have a bullet pointed outline for this one.  I will be working on a more detailed outline this week, and by November 1st I’m hoping I’ll have a few scenes, or at least sections of dialog drafted.

Will I include those words, however many I write, in my NaNo word count? You bet I will, as long as they make it into the draft. I will NOT be editing as I go this year, so it truly will be a rough draft, as first drafts should be.

Although my current planning state might put me into the Plantser category, in truth I consider myself a Planner.  I already know both my characters well having already written about them in Perfect Timing, and I also have a good idea of where I want them to go, because this won’t be Will and Lou’s last book!

What if you don’t finish the draft by November 30?

Let’s face it, while 50,000 words can seem a lot on one hand, it’s a relatively small total in novel writing terms.  Even Perfect Timing’s 67,500 words is on the shorter side.

If Distant Shores II isn’t finished by the end of the month, I’ll continue, NaNo style, into December.  Last year I cleared a couple weeks at the beginning of December as a contingency, and have done the same this year.  Ideally, I’ll finish the draft by the end of the first week of December.

Once it’s finished, I’ll not look at it until at least mid-February, when I’ll have another window in my schedule, and a clear head to work through the first edit.

You can read more about my writing process in this post from March this year.

Are you doing NaNoWriMo 2016?

If so, leave me a comment with your user name and I’ll buddy you.  Mine is Bex80.  Regardless of whether you’re a Nanite, do you have any advice for me?  I’d love to chat!

Apparitions Chapter One

Apparitions

My new short story Apparitions is launching soon and will be available for pre-order from Amazon.  To give you a taste of what’s to come, here is Chapter One…

Apparitions

“Anything that appears, especially something remarkable; an act of appearing; manifestation.”

Chapter One   Visions in the Mists

In the gentle mists of a splendid twilight or the graceful dawn, our deepest thoughts are truest, unconstrained and visceral.  They often appear quite unexpectedly; softly pleasant and then vanish most grudgingly.  Those delightful visions of something, or someone we never want to let go of, so pleasing is this dream.  And when finally we are unkindly forced to awaken from those happiest of thoughts we always feebly attempt to cling to every minute detail lest they recede into the envious mist from whence they came.  When someone is most special, you can discover that apparition over and over again as your head finds the pillow next.

Decades can pass quickly by, but the dearest of friendships remain as fresh as the day they were first made.  There is no judgment; no counting of wrongs or the smallest slights.  They can hold each other’s confidences and trust; even their most intimate feelings they share with no one else.  The unpretentious affections are tangible and palpable.  Some things voiced, some left unsaid… often silent far too long.  Is it introversion?  Are they unknowingly shared apparitions?  Is it fear of rejection?  Is it out of deepest respect?  Indeed, the possibilities exist.  Why the dance of evasion from expressions of sincere affection?  Why, indeed?

She is such a wonderful vision and he cherishes each unique thought and this passage of the lovely sonnet she has become in his mind.

Fantasy Blog Post

In this post, I’ll say more about my thoughts on fantasy.  It is something I touched on briefly in the Porn or Erotic Writing article that can be found here.

Earlier in that piece, before fantasy was mentioned, I said that I myself am a dreamer, so let’s start there, with the definition, according to Merriam Webster…

DREAMER

one that dreams :  one who lives in a world of fancy and imagination

Picking up on the first definition, here’s the definition of dream, according to the same source…

DREAM

a series of thoughts, visions, or feelings that happen during sleep : an idea or vision that is created in your imagination and that is not real : something that you have wanted very much to do, be, or have for a long time

Of course, dreams don’t only happen at night.  At least mine certainly don’t.  There are many, many times when I drift off into a dreamy state during the day, into a daydream…

DAYDREAM

a pleasant visionary usually wishful creation of the imagination

I’ve always been a dreamer.  I can’t remember a time when I didn’t dream in one way or another.  For me, it’s not only an integral part of who I am personally, but it’s also essential to who I am as an author.  Especially when coupled with something else that’s mentioned in all three of the above definitions…

IMAGINATION

the ability to imagine things that are not real : the ability to form a picture in your mind of something that you have not seen or experienced : the ability to think of new things : something that only exists or happens in your mind

In the Related Words sections of both daydream and imagination, you’ll find…

FANTASY

something that is produced by the imagination : an idea about doing something that is far removed from normal reality : the act of imagining something : a book, movie, etc., that tells a story about things that happen in an imaginary world

Yes, I know it’s taken us a little while to get here, but I did say that I was expanding on what I’d said in the other article.  In truth I already have, in a way.  I’ve taken you on what I hope is an enlightening, insightful journey along a couple of pathways, by way of definitions, that interlink.

All that’s well and good, but how do they relate to me, or you, or more specifically to my writing?

Personally, mine and my husband’s life is pretty good, but it wasn’t always that way for me.  When times were tough, I’d escape into a world that my mind, my imagination, had created.  My dreams, my fantasies, took many forms.  Sometimes the vision was location based, where I lived or was visiting somewhere different.  There are times, even now, when I still have that dream.

In other dreams the scene/s that played out were of a sensual and yes, erotic nature.  One of the beauties of dreams or fantasy, as well as being able to explore worlds that are far removed from reality, is that they allow you to do so safely.  Without fear of being hurt, either physically or emotionally.

It is my opinion that fantasies are critical to our development as we get older.  Yes, I’m referring to those of a sexual nature now.  The fantasy exploration can help us develop our intimate identity.  In the Porn or Erotic Writing article, I mention some of my personal preferences.  Preferences that I either include, or indeed omit, from my writing.

How have I come to those decisions?  How do I know, with abject certainty that I prefer to make love, instead of having sex?  How do I know that I dislike anything involving sensual contact that isn’t consensual?  Because I’ve explored those scenarios, safely, in my mind, in my imagination.

Our fantasies are very personal.  Just as each and every one of us is unique, so too are our fantasies.  They are unique to us.  They are also often secretive.  Something that we dare not mention to anyone, including our partner, or the object of our desire.

While there is nothing at all wrong with that, sharing your sensual, intimate fantasies can also greatly enrich a relationship.  Doing so certainly brought my husband and I closer and indeed has added even more depth, no pun intended, to our intimacy.

Fantasies, in some form or another, are a key part of my stories.  It is my hope that all of them, including Serendipity and others yet to be released, allow you, the reader, to escape to a world that is, perhaps, far removed from your reality.

SerendipityIn Serendipity, Sam Meyers meets Kate, his high school crush, the object of his teenage fantasies, some thirty years later.  Back then, in his senior year, he had been too shy to even ask her to dance, never mind take things to the next level.  Unbeknown to him, sophomore Kate felt similarly, yet kept her feelings secret.

During the school’s Homecoming Weekend, they chat and admit their attraction.  Then, as their relationship develops, in scenes that are sensual, pleasing and erotic, they explore their long held intimate desires and fantasies.

Serendipity Chapter One

Serendipity, launching on February 1st, 2016, is now available for pre-order across Amazon.  In this post I’m sharing the first chapter.

 Serendipity Chapter One

They were old acquaintances. High school days seemed so distant, but that is where it all started if the truth be told. They hadn’t even had much interaction with each other in those carefree days, given he was a senior when she was a sophomore, but they were aware of each other. They certainly noticed each other. Quietly noticed each other. You see, regardless of outward appearances of confidence, both of them carried their own sense of inadequacy and actual shyness in some cases. Both of them were involved in the music program. They were musicians and they were around each other on a fairly regular basis… but never seemingly in the same circle of acquaintances that would have them draw close to each other the way they both secretly desired. Maybe it was simply the way it was supposed to be; but maybe not. Maybe it was merely a matter of proper timing. Maybe it was merely a matter of time. In the grand scheme of things, how do you quantify time? What is a long time? Is a week a long time? Is a year a long time? Is 30 years a long time? For them, 30 years was perfect time. One might describe it as serendipity. It is a unique word to grasp but mankind is indebted to the English author Horace Walpole for the word serendipity, which he coined in one of the 3,000 or more letters on which his literary reputation primarily rests. In a letter of January 28, 1754, Walpole says that ‘this discovery, indeed, is almost of that kind which I call Serendipity, a very expressive word.’ Walpole formed the word on an old name for Sri Lanka, Serendip. He explained that this name was part of the title of ‘a silly fairy tale, called The Three Princes of Serendip: as their highnesses traveled, they were always making discoveries, by accidents and sagacity, of things which they were not in quest of….’

The occasion was surrounding events of a high school homecoming weekend, an American tradition that everyone ought to take advantage of once in a while. When the email went out to all of the school alumni, including Sam and Kate, who after all these years were separated by a couple thousand miles, it told of events that would bring old friends “home” from all across the country, and given most people’s hectic schedules in daily life it would be a nostalgic trip to by-gone days of youth and carefree times. It would be fun to see all the changes and expansion to the school that were phased-in over the years! The festivities would begin on Thursday when there would be the usual parade down the main street of the city, ending at the football field where memories of countless football games and halftime shows had been performed for nearly 100 years. There would be a “Thuse” for every team fan that would be led by the Alumni Band, followed by an introduction of the football team and coaches. Afterwards everyone was invited to a small club called Logan’s out near the lake where they could catch-up with old friends, imbibe, and dance to the oldies. What the heck, they thought! It might be a blast to see some old chums and see how life was treating them. On Friday night there would be the Homecoming Football Game under the lights in a very new stadium. Gone were the days of boys racing up and down a field of grass and mud. No longer were all the yard lines and boundary lines spread on the field with white powdered lime from a spreader before every game. In the intervening three decades since they last set foot on the field money had been raised to transform the venue into a top-notch sports facility. Comfortable stadium seating was a huge improvement over splintery wooden bleachers. Tons of light flooded the entire stadium. Astroturf provided a thick carpet for the game to be conducted upon. Painted field lines demarked the field to the point it looked like a professional gridiron and padded goal posts replaced the old H-beam steel pipe uprights.

Sam was still living in town and was certainly up for a mini-reunion of sorts. He had built up a small business and had several professionals working under his leadership. He could be at ease in a suit and tie or in hiking or backpacking gear. He tolerates the former; he’s more at home in the latter. Heredity and age had taken an unkind toll on his once full head of hair, but he jokingly says he had beaten most of it off his noggin’ on his many adventures as he charges head first into the unknown! Very active in the community, he is still in touch with many of his childhood friends living in the area.

At 5 feet eleven inches tall and 175 pounds he was in pretty good shape for his age. He always griped about those pesky five or ten pounds that seemed to constantly chase him since the age of 40, but made a point of staying physically active. He was never crazy about formal exercise but made attempts to stay fairly trim by riding his mountain bike two or three times a week, as the weather permits at lunch. The rail trails intersected in front of his office building and provided a convenient opportunity for easy access. He could bike 10 miles in 50 minutes and be back at his desk to begin his afternoon.

Sam is an adventurer at heart. He loves discovery. It didn’t matter “what” he discovered, as long as he was on an adventure. His adventures had taken him to many unique and sometimes exotic places. Every couple years he and some friends would head out for an Adirondack or Canadian canoe portage trip for a week or so. It would be them fending for themselves in the outdoors regardless of what nature threw at them. Another time, Africa had captured his heart and he spent a month on the southern edge of the Sahara Desert with a medical mission team building a mini-hospital in a very impoverished area of the bush. At the age of 40 he had decided to go back to earn a master’s degree and studied for a period of time in Europe. He loved to learn and he loved to immerse himself in the culture of a place. He had twice hiked through part of the Montana Rocky Mountains hunting black bear. He was passionate about steelhead trout fishing and was always thrilled with a raging fight on his hands trying to land a 15 pounder out of swift and icy waters. At one time he shot competitive sporting clays and skeet in his region and rallied to the challenge of going one-on-one against another shooter for 100 shots; often winning or losing by a single target.

Thanks to ham radio Sam had met people from around the globe, engaging with them in exciting conversation. On the historic day that the Berlin Wall was torn down in November 1989, he spoke to an East German man for an hour as the man described with a choking voice through the airwaves how freedom seemed foreign to him, since oppression was all he had ever known growing up in the eastern bloc. That brief on-air friendship earned Sam a special prize, when two weeks later an envelope arrived in the mail with several small, crumbled pieces from the now broken down barrier that had separated the east from the west during decades of Cold War posturing by super powers. The East German had sent him pieces of the Berlin Wall in appreciation for the conversation on a special day of victory in his life.

It was things like these that motivate and excite Sam. He didn’t simply want to “be”… he wanted to “live!” He sought adventure around every corner and would wring it dry for all it was worth.

It had been a very long time since Kate had even thought about high school! Back then she was a tall girl and always attracted to slim, tall boys. She always sported a great body. God had done some of His best work when he knit her together. She was stunning, simply put. She had auditioned and became part of the dance line in the high school band. They had been known all around as one of the top-notch marching machines and had the trophy case to prove it. They worked hard and were committed to excellence. Anything less than First Place was unacceptable. Every member felt that way.

Kate became a member of the 20-member dance line in addition to a ten-member majorette line. This was a very large 325-piece marching band that could carry a Rockette style dance line. So they did. It was a show stopper. Every section of the band was excellent and could perform a feature selection if they needed to. The band director’s sister had studied professional choreography in New York City and especially Rockette style choreography. She became the quintessential drill sergeant and leader for the thirty girl dance line. And the girls were hot! Tasteful in their performance, but hot, nonetheless. At that time in the late 1970’s, in this small town, the contribution that stylish woman made to the girls in the line was sophisticated, entertaining and nothing less than professional dance education. To the girl! These kids worked hard hour after hour, day after day and week after week. Months at a time. And it paid off in spades. In terms of education, they learned teamwork, cooperation, sacrifice, work ethic, blood, sweat, tears, compassion, competition, respect for others, respect for self, motivation, endurance and so much more. Never did a girl leave that dance line unchanged from the way she entered.

After graduation, she had immediately attended the local university, but after two years of filling in core curriculum still really didn’t know what she wanted to major in, so took some time off from school to travel. Life took many twists and turns, and ultimately Kate left her hometown to pursue her dreams of metropolitan living, artistic educational pursuits, travel and adventure. She had attended several prestigious art programs receiving two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree from three universities. Her artwork was on display and she enjoyed a following on her art website. Later she joined a large high-tech company as a contract negotiator and moved from Chicago to Las Vegas. She loves the area and has created a wonderful home that she shares with her playful dog. They often spend hours cavorting at a favorite local lake on the weekend refreshing them both in body and spirit.

At five foot ten inches tall, Kate’s athletic build and healthy look are accentuated by her shoulder length light brown hair with a slight auburn tint that set off her stunning Irish hazel eyes. She has an absolutely alluring and sensuous natural facial gaze that can melt the stony heart of a man to molten matter. Physically and emotionally strong, her inner strength of character manifests itself in her subtle and sexy physique. By day, at the office she favors simple and basic earth tones with tasteful accents of small pearl earrings accompanied by gold, silver or copper bracelets. In contrast, on special evenings she can just as easily play the sultry vixen, preferring black fishnet stockings and a lacy black camisole, sans undergarments for ease of access for her lover to explore a paradise of pleasure. Kate loved the slow, gradual build-up toward an evening of passion. She knows it is the little things she does that peaks a man’s arousal. Watching the face of her lover as he reaches the summit of his joy, and then joining with him as he melts down in a huge release of energy feeds her natural excitement. Knowing that life is precious and fleeting she flies fearlessly and boldly in her personal search for a deep connection with a kindred spirit.

Little does she realize as she fills in the blanks to register for the Homecoming weekend that as soon as she places her tongue on the stamp and drops the letter in the mailbox that she is on an intercept course with someone she had always wondered about in her youth and wondered about very differently now that she is a mature woman. Some might say it is kismet. Others might say it is mere luck. Kate will soon discover it was well worth the wait.
